This is one of the rare credentials the AI cycle is lifting rather than eroding. Worth knowing: the exam itself, MLS-C01, retired on March 31, 2026 and was replaced by the ML Engineer Associate (MLA-C01).
ML engineers, data scientists and AI platform engineers who design, train and deploy models on AWS — SageMaker pipelines, model monitoring, inference at scale. The employer is rarely AWS itself; more often it's the consultancies, banks and manufacturers building on top of it.
This certifies the skill doing the disrupting rather than the one being disrupted. Existing holders now sit on a scarce, retired credential, and the sensible next step is to stack the MLA-C01 successor or a data engineering cert rather than change lanes entirely.
Retirement is no longer a hypothetical risk but a live one. With MLS-C01 closed to new candidates, its premium will drift across to MLA-C01 over time, and holders should expect employers to treat the two as equivalent within 12–24 months.
