Before you buy, look at the payroll data. The job AI is taking isn’t yours. It’s the one underneath you, and the work came to you without the salary.

Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab published its latest read on August 26, built on payroll records rather than job postings. Employment of 22 to 25 year olds in the occupations most exposed to AI is running 19% below where it would be if those jobs had kept pace with the rest of the economy. Last year the gap was 15%. Experienced workers in the same occupations show no gap.

Companies aren’t laying off their mid-career people. They’ve stopped hiring the juniors underneath them. If your team hasn’t taken on anyone under 26 in a couple of years, you’ve already seen this up close.

Payrolls rose 162,000 in August and unemployment held at 4.1%, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, while the information sector shed jobs again. The layoff trackers listed AI as the top reason for cuts for five straight months, then in August it dropped to fourth. Companies are cutting hiring, not people.

You’ll also have seen the claim that AI will wipe out half of entry-level white-collar jobs within a few years. That came from the CEO of an AI company in an interview, and it’s been repeated until it sounds like one. The measured number is Stanford’s 19%.

Here’s where it puts you.

You’re harder to replace than you were two years ago, because the pipeline that produces people with your experience has slowed down, and that’s the thing that moves pay. At the same time, the work a junior used to do has landed on your desk, usually with a Copilot license attached and no extra headcount. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts entry-level developer pay in the US at $82,460. That’s the price of the work you absorbed. Most people took on the scope without repricing the role.

Three things worth doing.

Reprice the scope. The junior work you absorbed has a market price, so this is a comp conversation, not a workload conversation. Go in with what the market pays for your stack in your state, not with a list of tasks. The benchmark at certbueno.com/#checker gives you that number on screen, before you hand over anything.

Own the tools that replaced the hire. Someone on your team is going to decide how the AI tooling gets used, what it’s allowed to touch and who checks its work. Make that you. It’s the management line that didn’t exist two years ago and it comes with a title.

Spend on credentials that prove judgment, not the ones sold on fear. Architecture, security and governance certifications are where the premiums are rising, because those are the calls nobody is handing to a tool.

The market moved in your direction this year. Not many people have noticed yet.

Sources: Stanford Digital Economy Lab, “Canaries in the Coal Mine?“, updated Aug 26, 2026, ADP payroll data through June 2026. Three of the changes matter here.

There’s a new AI credential for people who don’t code. The AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) is aimed at product managers, consultants and the business side, $50 in beta from September 29. It’s not in the CertBueno Top 100 yet; it enters once there’s US pay data to rank it on.

The Machine Learning Engineer – Associate (#47, INVEST, $148,000 top of band) is moving from MLA-C01 to MLA-C02, and C01 closes to English sittings on September 28. The beta is $75 and starts the next day, with generative and agentic AI added. If you’re weeks from ready, sit C01. It’s valid for three years. If you’re starting from scratch, wait for C02, the version employers will be screening against next year.

Solutions Architect – Professional (#1, INVEST, $221,069 top of band) becomes SAP-C03 on November 17, registration from October 27, last C02 sitting November 16. Update the résumé, take the recruiter’s call, let a competing offer do your negotiating for you. For most of the last five years that advice worked, mostly because the market was forgiving. If the move didn’t pan out, there was another one behind it.

That’s no longer the case, and two weeks of data explain why.

On August 1 the Bureau of Labor Statistics revised May and June payrolls down by a combined 103,000. On August 28 its preliminary benchmark revision took a further 79,000 off March. Tech layoffs in 2026 passed last year’s total on August 6, 125,759 roles against 122,606 for all of 2025, with four months of the year still to run. So the candidate pool you’d be jumping into is bigger than it was in spring, and a lot of the people in it hold the same certifications you do.

None of this means you shouldn’t move. It means a move now costs more than it did, so it has to pay more. You give up your tenure, you go to the back of the line if the new employer cuts, and you forfeit whatever raise you could have negotiated where you are. We’ve spent a long time on the hiring side of this, and our view is simple: in this market, don’t move for less than 15%. Under that, the risk isn’t worth it. At 15% or more, it usually is.

Which raises the obvious question. Is that gap there for you right now?

Most people can’t say, because they’ve never seen the number. They know what they earn. They don’t know what the market pays for their particular combination of certifications, in their state, this quarter. So they guess, or they take a recruiter’s word for it, or they hand in their notice and find out afterwards.

Run the number first. The free benchmark at certbueno.com/#checker takes your current certifications and where you work and shows you what that stack is worth today against what you earn now. You see the result on screen before you confirm anything. If the gap is 15% or more, take it to your manager before you take it to a recruiter. Proof of what the market pays for what you already hold is a stronger opening than a competing offer, and it doesn’t burn the relationship if they say no. If they do say no, move, and take the number with you.

If the gap isn’t there, that’s useful too. It means your current stack is fairly paid and the raise you want isn’t sitting with another employer. It’s in whatever you add next. Our research this week is fairly blunt about where. Across more than 5,000 US employers, the cash premiums paid on top of base salary for certifications rose 1.8% in the latest quarter, the biggest quarterly rise in roughly a decade. Premiums for skills with no certification behind them fell 2.2%, the sharpest drop since 2002. Formal AI certifications average 9 to 11% of base salary as a category, and the strongest single credential we track reaches 18%.

The complication is that an AI certification doesn’t add the same amount to every stack. The one that pays on top of a security-heavy background isn’t the one that pays on top of cloud architecture, and picking wrong costs $300 to $1,000 in exam fees and three months of evenings. Working out which credential fits what you already hold is what the stacking data in the index exists for, and it’s what the bespoke AI Certification Stacking report does: it starts from your benchmark and tells you which AI certifications complement your existing certs, in what order, and what the index says each one adds.

Either way you go into October with a number. Most of the people you’re up against won’t have one.

THIS WEEK IN THE INDEX

AWS moved a deadline and almost nobody noticed

Since July, AWS networking specialists have been told to sit the Advanced Networking – Specialty exam before August 25 or miss out for good. On August 24, AWS’s own certification page quietly changed the last exam date to December 31, 2026. There was no announcement, and most prep sites and LinkedIn posts are still showing the old date.

The exam still costs $300. Anything you earn before it retires stays valid for the usual three years. After that no new ones are issued, and there is no ANS-C02 coming. AWS is pointing people to Skill Builder and a micro-credential instead, so this is a retirement, not a new version.

On the CertBueno Top 100 it sits at #15, $187,600 top of band, with a DIVERSIFY verdict. That means it still pays today, but the ceiling is fixed and demand is fading. If you’re close to ready, book before December 31, pass once and bank the three years. If you haven’t started, four months isn’t enough to be worth spending on a credential with no future. The index has the money moving to AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional (#1, INVEST, $221,069 top of band) and AWS Certified Security – Specialty (#5, INVEST), and that’s where we’d put the study time.

Sources: AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty certification page, updated Aug 24, 2026. The INVEST rating rests on Copilot Studio demand, not on the exam code — but holders now sit between a closed exam and a successor employers have not yet learned to read.

Microsoft Security Administrator Associate (≈$100,053) moved the same way, AZ-500 giving way to SC-500 in August, in the middle of the strongest security demand story on the index.

The same retirement reaches further down the index. Our Low-Code Developer line (≈$103,567) is proxied largely by Power Platform credentials, so PL-200 closing forces a successor mapping on a category whose underlying demand is still rising. The line moves for reasons that have nothing to do with what low-code developers are paid.

AWS Certified ML Engineer Associate (≈$148,000, low-confidence estimate) meets an MLA-C02 beta in September — a revision arriving while the credential is still inheriting the retired ML Specialty’s premium.

Against that, CKA held: ≈1,600 active US postings naming the certification (Adzuna via certdemand.com, August 2026), the highest cert-named posting count anywhere in the index, at ≈$147,466. Its exam has not been restructured, and employers keep writing it into job descriptions by name.

RPA Developer (≈$97,631) has a date on it. UiPath’s UiRPA and UiARD expire in October, and the vendor has repositioned the whole category around agentic automation — a certifying body declaring its own credential tier superseded, which is rarer than it sounds and more informative than any salary print.

INVEST

UPGRADE

DIVERSIFY

STABLE

What it means

A salary survey reprices a credential once a year. A vendor reprices it whenever it chooses to. The market treats the survey as the signal and the exam calendar as administration, and that is the wrong way round.

Retirements are the only certification event disclosed in advance. Nobody publishes next year’s median. But Microsoft, AWS and UiPath all told the market months ago exactly which codes were closing and when. That makes the retirement calendar the cheapest leading indicator in this asset class, and almost nobody prices off it.

What a retirement destroys is not demand, it is legibility. Power Platform work is not shrinking. Security operations work is not shrinking. What shrinks is the recruiter’s ability to match the string on a résumé to the string in a job description, and that gap runs 12 to 24 months. It is a discount applied to holders for something the vendor did.

The timing is what makes it expensive. Certification pay premiums rose at their fastest rate in a decade in early 2026 (Foote Partners ITSCPI), and formal AI credentials carry an average premium of ≈8.5% of base (Foote Partners, April 2026 release). A credential losing legibility during a repricing loses the repricing, not just the recognition.

Which is the case for the credentials whose exams cannot be quietly rewritten. CKA is proctored and hands-on, and it is the certification employers name most often by name. A vendor can rename an exam. It cannot rename a four-hour practical without admitting the new one is easier. Format is a moat, and the exam maps moving this quarter are the demonstration.

One thing to do

If you hold a credential whose exam code retired this year, put both codes on your résumé — the one you passed and the one that replaced it.
