Entry-level developer pay is $82,460. Companies stopped hiring them. The work went to you. Here’s how to get paid for it.
September 12, 2026
You just absorbed an $82,000 job

Every few weeks someone tells you AI is coming for your job and sells you the course to stop it. Before you buy, look at the payroll data. The job AI is taking isn’t yours. It’s the one underneath you, and the work came to you without the salary.
Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab published its latest read on August 26, built on payroll records rather than job postings. Employment of 22 to 25 year olds in the occupations most exposed to AI is running 19% below where it would be if those jobs had kept pace with the rest of the economy. Last year the gap was 15%. Experienced workers in the same occupations show no gap.
Companies aren’t laying off their mid-career people. They’ve stopped hiring the juniors underneath them. If your team hasn’t taken on anyone under 26 in a couple of years, you’ve already seen this up close.
Payrolls rose 162,000 in August and unemployment held at 4.1%, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, while the information sector shed jobs again. The layoff trackers listed AI as the top reason for cuts for five straight months, then in August it dropped to fourth. Companies are cutting hiring, not people.
You’ll also have seen the claim that AI will wipe out half of entry-level white-collar jobs within a few years. That came from the CEO of an AI company in an interview, and it’s been repeated until it sounds like one. The measured number is Stanford’s 19%.
Here’s where it puts you.
You’re harder to replace than you were two years ago, because the pipeline that produces people with your experience has slowed down, and that’s the thing that moves pay. At the same time, the work a junior used to do has landed on your desk, usually with a Copilot license attached and no extra headcount. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts entry-level developer pay in the US at $82,460. That’s the price of the work you absorbed. Most people took on the scope without repricing the role.
Three things worth doing.
Reprice the scope. The junior work you absorbed has a market price, so this is a comp conversation, not a workload conversation. Go in with what the market pays for your stack in your state, not with a list of tasks. The benchmark at certbueno.com/#checker gives you that number on screen, before you hand over anything.
Own the tools that replaced the hire. Someone on your team is going to decide how the AI tooling gets used, what it’s allowed to touch and who checks its work. Make that you. It’s the management line that didn’t exist two years ago and it comes with a title.
Spend on credentials that prove judgment, not the ones sold on fear. Architecture, security and governance certifications are where the premiums are rising, because those are the calls nobody is handing to a tool.
The market moved in your direction this year. Not many people have noticed yet.

AWS repriced its AI track
AWS put out its biggest certification update of the year on September 1. Three of the changes matter here.
There’s a new AI credential for people who don’t code. The AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) is aimed at product managers, consultants and the business side, $50 in beta from September 29. It’s not in the CertBueno Top 100 yet; it enters once there’s US pay data to rank it on.
The Machine Learning Engineer – Associate (#47, INVEST, $148,000 top of band) is moving from MLA-C01 to MLA-C02, and C01 closes to English sittings on September 28. The beta is $75 and starts the next day, with generative and agentic AI added. If you’re weeks from ready, sit C01. It’s valid for three years. If you’re starting from scratch, wait for C02, the version employers will be screening against next year.
Solutions Architect – Professional (#1, INVEST, $221,069 top of band) becomes SAP-C03 on November 17, registration from October 27, last C02 sitting November 16. It picks up generative AI architecture and post-quantum cryptography. Developer – Associate (#26) follows the same calendar, with DVA-C03 live December 1.
Elsewhere, Broadcom released new VCAP-VCF credentials and a rebuilt VCDX (#36) on August 31. Every original VCDX expired in June and holders are grandfathered in. That’s on top of VCP-DCV (#83) being pulled from the catalog. The credential most of the migrating workloads are heading to is Nutanix NCP – Multicloud Infrastructure (#14, $175,409 top of band). The pulled exam matters more than the rename.
Microsoft’s AZ-800 and AZ-801 retire September 30 for a single AZ-802.
